How to separate measured data from assumptions when reconstructing a part.
Define the function
Describe function, mating parts and the reason for replacement. Provide surviving parts, drawings and reference dimensions. Mark wear and damage: these usually should not be copied into the new design. Confirm your rights to use the supplied materials.
Resolve unknowns
Record which dimensions are measured, documented or still need agreement. An external scan does not determine material, threads or hidden channels. Agree on output format and editable source files beforehand.
Validate a prototype
Specify critical dimensions and assembly checks. Agree on trial manufacturing separately from modeling. Record corrections and the production revision after inspection. Visual similarity alone does not confirm function.
